    The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for 2009 was held on 3rd March in the Students’ Union. The new committee was elected, and is as follows:

    • Chair: Joe Frake
    • Vice-Chair: Holly Smith
    • Secretary: Jenny Durrant
    • Treasurer: Matthew Robinson
    • Social Secretary: Katherine McLoughlin
    • Political Officer: Jack Hands
    • Campus Affairs Officer: Duncan Schofield

    Congratulations to all the new committee!

    Additionally, motions changing the structure of the group were voted on. These included Committee Structure, which would convert the Political Officer and Campus Affairs Officer into permanent positions on the committee, and Finance Structure, which would move all our finances into the Students’ Union to be within their guidelines. Both motions were passed.

    Changes to the national structure of Conservative Future also resulted in us changing the name of the branch from Conservative Future Sheffield to Conservative Future University of Sheffield. As a branch, we will still be part of a larger Conservative Future Sheffield which would include us, and new branches to be formed at Sheffield Hallam University and one for the City for those not enrolled as students as either the University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam University.

    Also, as part of the AGM proceedings, the Area Chairman for South Yorkshire, James Gould, was endorsed by the membership.

    Hi all!

    I hope all your exams and other work have gone well!

    Semester 2 is approaching fast, and already we have several events for the diary! Our meetings will be taking place as usual on Tuesdays from 7-8pm, followed by drinks in the Interval. Venues for all our meetings up to Easter can be found here: http://www.tories.union.shef.ac.uk/?page_id=10

    * This Week! *
    This Tuesday, Philip Smith, the regional chairman for Yorkshire & Humberside is coming to talk to us about the changes to CF both nationally and in Yorkshire. This will take place at 7pm on Tuesday in the Pennines in the Students’ Union. Instructions on how to get to the Pennines can be found here: http://www.tories.union.shef.ac.uk/?page_id=12

    * Refreshers’ Fair - Wednesday 11th February - Octagon *
    Round 2 of the recruitment occurs at Refreshers’ Fair where all the clubs, societies, and some companies come in to advertise and give out stuff. As usual, we are having a stall. Any help throughout the day, between 10am and 3pm would be most appreciated, even if you can only do half an hour. Refreshers’ Fair takes place in the Octagon.

    * Yorkshire & Humber CF Campaign Day - Saturday 21st February - Penistone & Stocksbridge *
    The Yorkshire & Humber CF big campaign day is coming to Sheffield, with campaigning in Penistone & Stocksbridge with PPC Spencer Pitfield! This will be one mega campaign day with several CF branches in Yorkshire taking part. As other CF branches will be coming, a large Sheffield group would be fantastic! More details will be given nearer the time.

    * Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 3rd March - Dales, Students’ Union *
    The election of the committee for 2009-2010 will take palce at the AGM, as well as several votes on changes to committee structure. Please consider standing for the committee! It looks great on your CV and gives you a chance to be involved in planning and decision making at a central level within the group!
    There are 7 positions on the committee:
    Chair - day to day running of the Society
    Vice-Chair - assists the Chair and deals with membership issues
    Secretary - takes minutes at committee meetings, sends the weekly correspondence with the membership, and is a contact for the membership
    Treasurer - deals with the money of the Society
    Social Secretary - arranges socials such as nights out, bar crawls, laser quest, bowling, trips to Hillsborough dog races, etc.
    Political Officer - liaises with the local Associations in Sheffield and Stocksbridge & Penistone and other CF branches to arrange campaign days, arranges speakers for meetings, and acts as a contact for the Area Chairman and Regional Chairman
    Campus Affairs Officer - arranges campaigning of the student body within the University and Union, sorting out hall raids, fairs, leafleting, and liaising with other political groups to arrange debates, inter-party football, etc.
    * Socials *
    We are planning a couple of socials up to the AGM:
    - Bowling at Hollywood Bowl in Valley Centretainment: we last went in the summer term last year, and it proved to be great fun! You will need cash for the tram to get there and to pay for the bowling. More details to follow soon! We are planning to go on Tuesday 17th February in place of our weekly meeting (but probably return to Interval afterwards!)
    - Population: we are planning a night out to Population on either Monday 16th February or 23rd February. Let us know if you want to come along tickets cost £3, and we can buy your ticket using the PopPass system!

    I hopt to see you all on Tuesday!

    James Gould, current vice-chairman of CF Sheffield, has been appointed as Area Chairman for South Yorkshire. This completes the changes in structure to Conservative Future in Yorkshire & the Humber. Congratulations to James!

    An area chairman is responsible for overseeing the activities of CF branches in a particular area, in this case South Yorkshire. They are also responsible for liaising with other CF branches and local associations to coordinate and promote campaigning and share resources, as well as to promote CF generally and assist in increasing its presence.

    On Tuesday, we held a forum for members on the future of CF Sheffield activities, looking specifically at our campaigning. It was agreed that the two main purposes of the society were to get more students involved in the Conservative Party, and campaign in the local area assisting the local associations. This campaigning would take an opposition to the present Labour Government and prove the Conservatives are the best party to vote for at the next General Election, and stand up to the far left movement.

    Additionally, an officer roles review was carried out on the committee structure, and the addition of two new officers for campaigning to the committee was overwhelmingly supported. The Political Officer would be responsible for arranging campaigning in and around Sheffield with the local associations and assist in the political arrangements of the group. The Campus Affairs Officer would be responsile for campaigning on the University campus.

    An EGM is to be held next Tuesday, 2nd December, to elect a temporary Political Officer and Campus Affairs Officer who would sit on the committee until 3rd March when the AGM occurs.

    THe University of Sheffield branches of Conservatives Future, Labour Students, and Liberal Democrat Youth took part in an inter-party football tournament last night at the Goodwin Sports Centre. It consisted of 3 matches of 15 minutes each, which proved to be very exciting! The scores were:

    • Liberal Democrats 1-0 Conservatives
    • Liberal Democrats 1-1 Labour
    • Conservatives 4-2 Labour

    The Liberal Democrats won the tournament overall, but we won on goals! Congratulations to all the team for playing so well despite the freezing weather conditions!
